This program provides funding for the deployment of positive train control (PTC) system technology for Intercity Passenger Rail Transportation, freight rail transportation, and/or Commuter Rail Passenger Transportation.

Local Public Agencies, Nonprofit Organizations, Private Corporations, State Government
Eligibility Notes
Eligible applicants are: a state; a group of states; an interstate compact; a public agency or publicly chartered authority established by one or more states; a political subdivision of a state; Amtrak or another rail carrier that provides intercity rail passenger transportation; a class 2 railroad or class 3 railroad; any rail carrier or rail equipment manufacturer in partnership with at least one of the entities described previously; the Transportation Research Board together with any entity with which it contracts in the development of rail-related research, including cooperative research programs; aUniversity transportation center engaged in rail-related research; or a non-profit labor organization representing a class or craft of employees of Rail Carriers or Rail Carrier contractors.

Applications must identify an eligible applicant as the lead applicant.

Eligible projects include: Back office systems; wayside, communications and onboard hardware equipment; software; equipment installation; spectrum; any component, testing and training for the implementation of PTC systems; and interoperability.

Match Notes
A match of at least 20% is required, as the federal share of total costs will not exceed 80%. Applications with 50% match or more will be more competitive.
