Summary

The purpose of this program is to create new and innovative apprenticeship opportunities in sectors in which apprenticeship training does not exist. Funding through this program is intended to offer initial startup and implementation costs to create/refine curricula, purchase equipment, and recruit apprentices and employers. Priority sectors include: advanced manufacturing, allied health care, and information technology as well as programs addressing drought relief, underserved populations, energy efficiency, etc. Existing apprenticeship programs may apply provided that the scope of the project meets this program’s overall intent. Proposed program must be approved by California Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

Eligibility Notes

Eligible applicants are California community colleges and California Department of Education local education agencies (LEAs), including regional occupational centers and programs, adult schools, county offices of education, and local school districts. Applicants should partner with other agencies or entities as needed to be successful.

Participating employers must provide at least 10 percent of the award amount via cash or in-kind contributions. Cash match may include ,metro or equipment donations, and in-kind resources may include staff time, volunteer time, supplies, equipment, and use of facilities.

Competition Notes

In order to be successful, potential grantees should be prepared to quickly find employers who demonstrate interest in creating an apprenticeship training program; identify an education solution or curriculum for the Related and Supplemental Instruction (RSI) component of the apprenticeship; and begin discussions with the DAS (or have approval already) to outline the structure and standards of the apprenticeship.
